ROBERT A. STEIN
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION

Robert A. Stein, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the American Bar Association, is the former dean of the University of Minnesota Law School, Minneapolis. He has served as executive director since 1994.

Stein has overall management responsibility for staff operations at the Association's headquarters in Chicago and its Washington, D.C., office.

Overseeing a staff of more than 900 persons and budgets of more than $175 million, Stein also is responsible for the development and execution of strategic and tactical plans to implement the programs and policies adopted by the ABA's Board of Governors and House of Delegates.

Stein served as chair of the ABA's Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, as well as a member of the American Bar Foundation Board of Directors and the Minnesota State Bar Association Board of Governors prior to his appointment as executive director of the ABA.

In addition to his duties as law school dean, Stein was chairman of the board of directors of the Higher Education Assistance Foundation (HEAF) during a managed wind-down and liquidation of the guaranty agency in the federal student loan program. At the close of the agency, Stein presented the U.S. Department of Education with a check for $300 million, the balance of the agency's assets. That was about twice the amount that had been anticipated when the Education Department decided to close HEAF down and appointed Stein and a new Board to manage the transition.

Stein had been affiliated with the law school since 1964, first as a professor and as dean from 1979-1994. He was a visiting scholar with The American Bar Foundation in 1975-77, and was a visiting professor at the University of Chicago Law School in 1975-76 and UCLA Law School in 1969-1970. He practiced law with Foley & Lardner in Milwaukee in 1961-64, and was counsel to the Minneapolis law firm of Gray, Plant, Mooty, Mooty & Bennett from 1980 to 1994.

He is a member of the council of the American Law Institute and a member of the executive committee of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. He is also a fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law, and the American College of Tax Counsel.

Stein is married to Sandra H. Stein, and they are the parents of three daughters - all lawyers - Linda Stein Routh, Laura Stein Conrad and Karin Stein O'Boyle.
