Statement by Robert E. Stein
Chairman, American Bar Association AIDS Coordinating Committee

In Response to U.S. Supreme Court Decision, Bragdon V. Abbott et al.

June 25, 1998

"The American Bar Association is extremely pleased with the Supreme Court's ruling today that, from the moment of infection, people with HIV are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Court's decision confirms, and the ABA agrees, that persons with HIV cannot be denied health care treatment because of their actual or perceived HIV status, unless such treatment constitutes a significant risk to others, as determined by objective and available scientific information."
